Prepare for your trip

Passport

Check your passport expiry date prior to booking your trip!
• If the passport expires six months from your departure then you will need to renew it.
• Children under the age of 16 now need to have their own passport, which is valid for five years.
• Renewing a UK passport can take up to three weeks depending on the service you choose.

Visa

If your destination country requires a visa, be sure to apply in good time.
• Our basic country information page shows the visa requirements for UK passport-holders for major countries. If in doubt, please contact your JTB UK travel consultant who will be pleased to advise, and arrange any necessary visa for you.
• Most visas require at least six months validity remaining on your passport.

Health

If vaccinations are recommended or required for your destination country, be sure to arrange in good time.
If in doubt about health recommendation for a particular country, check the "netdoctor" link on the left.

Travel documents

• Visa(s), if required
• air ticket (or booking confirmation in the case of electronic ticket)
• hotel voucher(s) or confirmation(s) if applicable
• travel insurance
including photocopies of all above in case of loss.
• Certification of relevant vaccinations if required.
• If hiring a car at your destination, remember your driving licence.

Money

Credit card, cash... amount and currency depends on the nature and destination of your trip.

Toiletries

including any personal indispensables, and don't forget the sun screen.

International adaptor

For electrical appliances: electric sockets vary considerably. Our basic country information page shows types of sockets used in major countries.

Contact list

Addresses, phone numbers, email addresses of family, friends and business contacts you may need while away.
Keep a pen accessible (for completing forms etc. during the journey). A small notepad might be useful too.

Mobile phone

If taking one, make sure it is set up to function in your destination. For some countries, eg. Japan, telephone systems are not compatible, and your mobile will not work. In this case you might consider hiring a mobile phone for your trip.

Lost or stolen passport

If your passport is post or stolen while abroad, report it immediately to the police and to the British Embassy of the country you are in.
